My Coffee
I enjoy a good cup of coffee, sometimes I think I enjoy it a bit too much. For my birthday, I was given the ultimate coffee indulgence—the means to make the perfect cup of coffee. The Chemex coffee maker is both aesthetically pleasing and it makes a brilliant cup of coffee.
Here is the Chemex.
A chemist decided he wanted the best cup of coffee and so he experimented and experimented until he came up with the answer. Of course he used beakers in his experiments and the Chemex that you can purchase looks like a little bit of science. The filters are an important part of the process. They are thicker than most and not chemically bleached.
Ingredients
In order to make good coffee, you need good ingredients. Transcend coffee are here in Edmonton and they are locally know as the best coffee roasters. They have a couple locations and if you love coffee, you should visit them. Don’t get me wrong, I like other types of coffee too. Fresh water, freshly ground beans and you’re ready.
Blooming coffee
Pour a little hot water on the fresh grounds in the filter to let them “bloom.” This heats up the grounds and gets them ready to release their flavour.
Glorious
Now pour water that is just under a boil over top of the grounds. It will take a bit of time to go through filter. The top must be filled a few times and for bigger pots of coffee the grounds can slow down the coffee being filtered. However, this time is also a part of the process since when you’re done you can drink your coffee right away.
Pour your cup
Pull out the filter (compost that bad boy!) and enjoy.
Observations
The coffee I make in the Chemex is substantially more tasty than coffee made in a regular coffee maker. It’s not as bitter as coffee from a french press and still has all the flavour. I’ve also noticed that since I started using the Chemex I need less cream and sugar. Because the coffee oils are filtered out, there also is less aftertaste in the coffee and in fact left-over coffee can be reheated and it doesn’t become grey.
Sorry for the poor quality photos. I’m not much of a photographer and I didn’t even use a real camera.
