One of these things is not like the other 4

As useful as Google is I’m often disappointed by their design. This may sound trivial but I removed the underline on my search results. I simply went into my preferences and took off the default underline. It was such a simple change but it brought such happiness I had to share it. Now I just need to write a Greesemonkey script and change the link colours as well.

Some comments...

  • Seth you should look into the Firefox extension "Stylish" it acts faster than GM for adding user styles and is easier to use.

  • I'm with you that maybe Google could use a little spice in their design, but I'm afraid I have to respectfully disagree with you on the underline.

I think the underline adds a slight visual anchor to each result, which makes it easier to scan the results page. Without the underline the results seems to blend together. It might not be necessary to indicate that it's a link, but I think it helps draw attention to the headline of each result, since the font size/weight of the headline and text are fairly similar.

The colors, however, are completely hideous. I really hope you figure out how to change them :D

  • I'm with Kyle on this one- I think the underline really helps define individual pages, and allows for faster scanning. Agreed on the terrible colors though!

  • Ok. But do 'we' do it?
